Bits of wisdom #3
An ongoing series whereby Aunt Mary Ellen shares things she’s learned over time. Indulge me.
Belonging to your community is a large part of a happy life. Join a club, volunteer, go to church and get involved, start a book club, attend local events. Getting to know and be known around the community will enhance your life. You’ll make friends, find spheres of influence so that you can better the part of the world in which you live. A busy life is a happy life and people who engage with their local communities have more fulfilling lives. It gives you a chance to give back, to pay forward and all those other cliches that mean that you should not live a solitary, selfish life.
Do not let yourself be sucked into online arguments. You will never change anyone’s mind on X or Facebook and it is a waste of time to try. You might think the person is a complete idiot who has everything wrong, but really, why should you care. You have better things to do than straighten out all the people on the internet who are wrong about something. Don’t waste your time.
When you find a pair of pants that fit well and look good buy them in every color or buy a few pairs in the color you love. This applies to classic white shirts as well. I would also advocate that women do this with a lipstick they love. No sooner than I find the perfect lipstick than it is discontinued. I always buy five when I find one I love. Store them in the freezer. Seriously, it’s worth the investment.
Always assume you can do both. You can go to the party and still get to bed early, you can love being home but still have wanderlust and want to travel, you can have big, important responsibilities but still nourish your creativity. You can’t always do everything but sometimes you can do both things.
I'm intrigued by #11! I'd love to hear your stories behind this. This is a really big question -- whether to try to do both or limit yourself ot trying one!
