The day after Christmas my cousin passed away. She was not sick, she was not in any pain and she had been fine the moment before she died. She was, literally, here one moment and gone the next. Right at the beginning of a busy day. Without warning, her time had just come, leaving everyone who loved her stunned and heartbroken.

Trish and I at two. I’m the bug-eyed one.

She had just retired from a long career serving the city she loved, had just been married to the man she had loved for years, and was packing to move to their country house in Pennsylvania full of happy plans and dreams. She was 58.
