Perhaps the most middle-aged thing I’ve done, besides investing in an enormous amount of reading glasses because I keep losing them, is to start a walking routine.
Walking is heart healthy, helps you lose weight, and is gentle exercise, even if you are going briskly. It’s also a great way to get outside. Oddly, I am the least outdoorsy person you will ever encounter but I would much rather be outside getting exercise than stuck in a gym, or a basement where I am walking on the treadmill when it rains.
Yes, it’s become that much of a habit now that when it rains I still walk. Weird. I would have laughed if you had told me a year ago that this would be me.
I’ve lost some weight but have a long way to go. Miles and miles.
I started in March with three laps around the .55-mile path near my house. I’m up to six most days, five when my husband joins me because his schedule is less flexible than mine. The weather was so beautiful this morning I could have gone longer but I had to get home to drive a kid somewhere.
Even so, getting about 8,000 steps in before 7:30 in the morning is a good thing, especially for me. I am, or was, sluggish at best.
