I’ve been working on a project requiring that I know something about art. Art with a capital A. Renaissance, Impressionism, Realism, Romanticism, Baroque, all that old-school stuff. It’s been a pleasure learning more about the various artists and studying their work however I recently found myself in a bit of a slump with the project, so to get myself going again, I sought inspiration at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Like many New Yorkers, this is my favorite destination on the island of Manhattan and one to which I do not get to often enough - it has been several years since I spent any time there and I was eager to visit the hallowed halls.
I had some specific areas I needed to look at but beyond that, I was looking forward to a long wander, and a long wander it ended up being. I decided in the interest of getting my steps in, I would walk the forty blocks from Grand Central to the museum. It was a lovely walk up Madison Avenue, many of the stores were closed due to the global computer outage (I’m still not sure what happened there), so it was a little less crowded than I think it normally is. It was a peak window shopping opportunity for me since I love fashion and some high-end designers have storefronts on Madison. Balenciaga, Dolce and Gabanna, Ralph Lauren, Tom Ford, Alexander McQueen, and a personal favorite, Celine. I stared way too long at a pair of sunglasses in the window that I have been lusting after for years. Even if I were willing to spend $510 on sunglasses history has taught me that I would shortly sit on them, lose them, scratch them, or inflict some other disaster on them, and then I would spend the rest of my life in a state of regret. $12 Target sunglasses are more my speed and budget.
